GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven IITs (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

GATE 2016 Exam Dates, Pattern, Syllabus Announced

The Indian Institute of Science (IISC) has announced the details of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2016. Just like the previous years, GATE 2016 will also be jointly administered by the IISC along with the seven IIT’s at Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Madras, Kharagpur, Mumbai, and Roorkee.

Online registration for the exam will commence on September 1 whereas the last date for submission of online application forms is October 1.

Interestingly, the syllabi for GATE 2016 have undergone some significant changes. As a result, unlike GATE 2015, the next rendition of the exam will comprise a total of 23 papers. A new stream (Petroleum Engineering) has also been added to the syllabi.

The duration of the exam will be 3 hours and it will include 65 multiple choice questions (MCQ). GATE 2016 will be an online computer-based test (CBT).

Another major change introduced is the new policy that allows candidates to use online virtual calculators. Till now, students were required to bring their own calculators to the exam hall.

The admit cards for GATE 2016 will be made available on the official GATE website.

Eligibility criteria

In order to appear in GATE 2016, students must have completed their B.E./B.Tech/B.Arch/B.Pharm; or M.Sc/M.A./MCA; or Int M.E./M.Tech; or dual degree and Int M.E./M.Tech (post B.Sc); and professional society examinations (equivalent to B.E./B.Tech/B.Arch) with good marks under any recognized university.

GATE Exam dates:

Forenoon – January 30 and 31, 2016 (Saturday) – from 09:00 to 12:00

Afternoon – February 6 and 7, 2016 (Sunday) – from 14:00 to 17:00
